California Stone Fruit Production Drops Like a Rock
Anyone shopping at a California farmer’s market has heard the whispers and seen the grim shakes of the head. But now it’s official: The state’s stone fruit crop will hit the lowest point in many years, according to the Californa Farm Bureau Federation.
Heavy rains pummeled the state just as stone fruit trees blossomed, and the delicate flowers fell to the ground before they could mature into plump, juicy fruits.
Boo hoo for California? Yes, and much of the rest of the country. The state produces two-thirds of the country’s peach crop, almost all of the nectarines, almost all of the domestic prunes, and a sizable portion of the plums.
That perfect peach will be hard to find this year.
